Years of History
Historical documents1 confirm local
town band concerts, in South Royalton, dating back at least as far
back as the summer of 1886.
Newspaper articles indicate performances by a cornet band,
common in that era, as early as 1869.
Such research2 has indicated at
least 150 years history for band concerts given by local musicians.
The South Royalton Town Band has been in present form for
far more than 78 years.
Since the mid-1940s and through our 2015 season, we had been under the
direction of our late Director, Mr. Richard W. (Dick) Ellis.
Since Mr. Ellis' passing, the band has affirmed the intent to continue
with its tradition and continue development of new leadership.
Recognizing the need for better access and to house the larger number
of band members, a committee was formed to explore the design,
construction, and location of a new bandstand.
With help from a small number of major donors, and many contributors
in the community, a new modern bandstand was constructed on the
South Royalton Green.
2004, the new Richard W. Ellis Bandstand opened
